QUALITY &
SUSTAINABILITY
It is well known that the textile industry is not the most humane and environmentally friendly industry there is. Therefore, we try to maintain the highest possible standard that is within our means. For one, this means that the cotton in our products is 100% organic cotton. A few products (sweaters and hoodies) also contain a small amount of recycled polyester. We also only source goods from producers who are committed to fair trade and are subject to strict controls.
In addition, we avoid unnecessary waste at every stage of our work - for example, we store and ship without any plastic packaging. If you want to find out more, you can find detailed information here.

SUSTAINABILITY
What lasts longer is worn longer - so quality and sustainability go hand in hand. We only use screen printing as a printing technique, which is by far the highest quality process and ensures the most durable quality.
If you want to extend the lifespan of your matttma products even further, you can find a few pro tips for gentle washing in our washing guide:

The vast majority of our products are made from 100% organic cotton. Organic cotton has enormous advantages over conventional cotton for both the consumer and the environment. You can find out more about this on the Internet. A few of our products contain a small percentage of polyester, which is then recycled polyester.
We store and pack our clothes without the use of plastic. So you get your matttma product wrapped in silk paper :) We also use environmentally friendly packing tape. We generally pay attention to using materials sparingly and avoid plastic wherever possible, e.g. for the thread we use to sew on labels, the cord of the bouldering brush and our stickers (environmentally friendly according to the manufacturer :))
The companies from which we source clothing are all members of the Fair Wear Foundation and are therefore committed to achieving an ethical standard with their production conditions: no forced or child labor, fair wages and working hours, the possibility of unionization, safe and healthy working conditions, legally binding employment relationships, etc. You can find out more about this on the FWF website: https://www.fairwear.org/about-us/labour-standards Stanley Stella, from whom we source almost all of our blanks (all but one T-shirt from earth positive) is one of the highest rated companies in the FWF and regularly uploads their performance check (i.e. how they are currently performing). You can easily find it by entering the brand name in the search field: https://www.fairwear.org/
Since we do not yet have the textiles produced ourselves, we rely on the producers that are available on the organic market and suit our taste, especially in terms of cut and color. Most of the clothes we buy are from Stanley Stella, who produce in India or Bangladesh. Stanley Stella provides information about local production on its website: https://stanleystella.com/de-de/about-stanley-stella/made-in-bangladesh You can also read about what is being done locally to make a difference in the textile industry under FAIR TRADE. The garments are then finished by printers in Germany (printing & embroidery) or by us personally.
At this point we need to make it clear: The producers from whom we source our unfinished clothing are certified, but matttma itself has no certificates! There are good reasons for this: The well-known problems in the textile industry arise primarily in the production of the garments themselves, which takes place in countries where human and environmental rights are not so strict or are strictly controlled. As we have not yet had any production carried out in a factory ourselves, but only use sample manufacturers that have already produced the garments, it is sufficient for us at this stage if only the manufacturers of the garments are certified. Further processing by matttma, i.e. mostly printing and embroidery, is carried out exclusively in print shops in Germany. And the rest of the work, such as packaging, sewing on labels, etc., is done by us personally. Furthermore: In order to be allowed to declare our finished products as "organic" and "fair", each of our processing steps would have to be checked separately. Of course, this costs money and would make our products a lot more expensive, which we don't want at the moment and is not yet possible. But such in-house certification is of course one of our goals for the future. If you want to find out more about the certification of our suppliers, you can find all the information on their websites: https://earthpositive.se/about https://stanleystella.com/de-de/sustainability/certifications Of course, we also know that certificates are no guarantee that everything will be complied with. This is demonstrated by past scandals in the textile industry. But that is no argument for using uncertified suppliers, because you can be absolutely sure that they were produced under poor conditions.
The garments we source from manufacturers are all declared as vegan. With other elements, such as the yarns or screen printing inks, it is sometimes not so easy to find out, as they sometimes contain animal components depending on the color and it is sometimes a printing secret which colors are used at all. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that our products are vegan.
